Homemade Natural Toothpaste

February 26, 2017 by jen anstee

To reduce the toxin load on my body, I decided over a year ago that i would replace my store-bought cosmetic, cleaners, soaps, deodorant, toothpaste...etc with homemade ones once my current supply was empty.  I have been using natural brands for quite a while now but they seem to be getting more expensive and the ease of making my own has given me pride in providing the nutrients needed for my personal health challenges like psoriasis, allergies and skin sensitivities.

Toothpaste is something I was spending $6-8 a month on, which is not very expensive but I was finding they were making my gums very sensitive.  I am not sure what was causing the gum sensitivity but I decided I needed to try out a recipe of my own.  After using this recipe for 6 months, I can say that I no longer have the sensitivity, my teeth have become a lot whiter and my bank account loves me more for it.

Now this toothpaste wont be foamy like the store-bought ones but you know what the ingredients are, you can alter the flavour to what suits your family and I am sure you have all the ingredients in your house.

Ingredients:

  1. 2 tbls organic coconut oil
  2. 1 tbls sea salt
  3. 1 tbls baking soda
  4. 10 drops of doTERRA Onguard Essential Oil
  5. 10 drops of Peppermint Essential Oil

***feel free to mix up the essential oils to fit your needs and taste. Wild Orange & lemon are great options and are also antimicrobial.

Directions:

  1. Mix coconut oil, sea salt and baking soda in a small container
  2. Add in the essential oils and mix well
  3. Keep in a cool dry place.  The toothpaste will be pure liquid if left in hot environment.

Eliminating the toxic ingredients like triclosan, SLS (sodium Laurel sulfate) and flouride reduces your risk of diseases, hormone disruption and cancers.  The combo of Sea salt, coconut oil and baking soda make this toothpaste a germ fighting, antimicrobial power house.  Add in some antimicrobial, antiseptic, and antiviral essentials oils and this toothpaste is your mouths new best friend.
